The EpiDerm™ Skin Model uses a culture of normal human-derived epidermal keratinocytes that forms a multi-layered model of the human epidermis. This model is mitotically and metabolically active and closely mimics the responses to products exhibited by its in vivo counterpart (RIPT).
Dermal irritation testing is conducted using the ET-50 method (time of exposure needed for a test article to reduce the viability to 50% of control tissues) and the EpiDerm tissue model. This model consists of normal (non-cancerous), human cell-derived epidermal keratinocytes cultured to form a multilayered model of the human epidermidis. The dermal irritation evaluation used at BioScience Laboratories involves applying neat test articles to the EpiDerm tissue model. This test method closely approximates the responses to product exposure exhibited by its in-vivo counterpart, the Human Repeat-Insult Patch Testing. Based on the ET-50 and comparison to benchmark materials, the degree of dermal irritancy can be estimated. An additional benefit of dermal irritation testing is that, in many instances, results obtained using animal-based testing do not correlate well with the actual response seen in human tissue.
